It follows the\ntraditional path used by pilgrims traveling to F\u00e1tima to fulfill their acts of faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether you choose to cover this route\non foot, by mountain bike (MTB), or off-road vehicle, you will pass through privileged locations. As you head North,\nthe environment and diverse landscapes emphasize a reunion with nature, offering the perfect setting for\ncontemplation and spiritual reflection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Caneiras: The \"Avieira\" Fishing Village\nThe route begins with a suggested visit to the fishing village of Caneiras. This is a typical riverside settlement of the\nAvieiros (Tagus nomads), famous for its stilt houses built on wooden pillars to protect them from river floods. The local\nfishing heritage is evident in the colorful boats and nets scattered along the banks. If you walk by the river, you may\nspot Great White Herons, which bring movement and color to the landscape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The City of Santar\u00e9m\nFollow the markers into the heart of Santar\u00e9m. If you are new to the city, take the opportunity to discover its majestic\ncenturies-old churches, the Portas do Sol Garden, and the unique charm of its historic streets<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Heritage &amp; Olive Groves:\nQuinta de Vale de Lobos On the road to the charming village of Az\u00f3ia de Baixo, make a stop at Quinta de Vale de Lobos.\nThis was the home of Alexandre Herculano, the renowned historian and novelist who produced the first virgin olive\noil in Portugal. Visitors can enjoy an olive oil tasting and a guided tour of the groves\u2014a unique moment where history\nand tradition are perfectly preserved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Heading North: A Changing Landscape\nAs you continue North, the terrain becomes more rugged. Extensive olive groves line the path, interspersed with wild\npine trees, holm oaks, and Mediterranean scrubland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Passing through Advagar, Santos, and Arneiro das Milhari\u00e7as, you approach the municipality's border. Upon reaching\nthe ridge of the Three Windmills (Tr\u00eas Moinhos), you will be rewarded with an idyllic panoramic view. This breathtaking\nscenery offers a moment of rebirth, far removed from the pressures of daily life.\n15\n[!TIP]Pilgrim Advice: Look for the official blue arrows (for F\u00e1tima) or yellow arrows (for Santiago) that often overlap in\nthis region. This phenomenon has developed over centuries, attracting people from the most diverse\norigins to the present day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pilgrims say that walking the Way of Saint James is to experience renewal and transformation\u2014an inner journey that\noften surpasses the tangible experience of the trip itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Santar\u00e9m is part of the so-called Central Way, considered the most important pilgrimage route to Santiago from\nPortuguese lands, being the choice of the majority of pilgrims who have headed to Santiago since the 9th century<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this approach to the section of the Way of Saint James that crosses the Municipality of Santar\u00e9m, we highlight some\nPoints of Interest (PI) directly related to the Way of Saint James that can be observed along this route.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">South of Santar\u00e9m, the route\u2014which begins in Lisbon and follows from Valada\/Cartaxo across agricultural lands lined\nwith vineyards\u2014reaches the paved EN 587 near the Santar\u00e9m airfield, continuing to \u00d3mnias. From here, it climbs the\nCal\u00e7ada da Fonte da Junqueira, passing an old fountain halfway up the slope, until reaching the plateau of the city of\nSantar\u00e9m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 1 &#8211; Fonte da Junqueira<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A fountain of great importance due to its location on the access slope to the Santar\u00e9m plateau, allowing pilgrims and\ntravelers coming from the South to resupply and regain their strength. The structure visible today dates back to 1835.\n(Water unfit for consumption).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the city, after passing Rua Pedro de Santar\u00e9m, the route continues to Largo C\u00e2ndido dos Reis and enters what would\nhave been the \"Mansos Gate,\" one of the gates of Santar\u00e9m's walls and the southern entrance of the current Rua Jo\u00e3o\nAfonso. It continues to the Canto da Cruz, where it turns right onto Rua Miguel Bombarda toward the Church of Santo\nEstev\u00e3o, the Sanctuary of the Holy Miracle\u2014a point of passage noted in much bibliography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 2 \u2013 Church of Santo Estev\u00e3o \/ Sanctuary of the Holy Miracle (N.M.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Sanctuary since 1997, it is nevertheless related to the miracles that occurred in the 13th century and has been a site\nof pilgrimage and visits by various monarchs over the centuries, notably Queen Saint Elizabeth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the 14th and 15th\ncenturies, it became the most popular sanctuary in the kingdom<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, it is one of the most visited sites in\nSantar\u00e9m, especially by foreigners participating in religious journeys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, you reach Rua Braamcamp Freire (formerly the Cal\u00e7ada da Amargura) via the steps that provide access to\nit. Continuing to the left, you catch sight of the Vale de Torres and climb toward the square where the Church of Gra\u00e7a\nis located, part of the ancient Augustinian convent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 3 \u2013 Church of Gra\u00e7a<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former Augustinian Convent (N.M.). Pilgrims with more means, including clergy, found accommodation in the\nmonasteries of various orders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Augustinian Monastery provided shelter to pilgrims, and the Church of Gra\u00e7a was\nan integral part of that monastery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The route continues through Rua de Belmonte, crossing the Terreirinho das Flores toward the current Av. 5 de\nOutubro, passing the Church of Alpor\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 4 \u2013 Church of S. Jo\u00e3o de Alpor\u00e3o (N.M.) \/ Caba\u00e7as Tower (N.M.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A focal point for understanding the medieval town, as the wall gate that once existed between the clock tower (called\nCaba\u00e7as) and the bell tower of the Church of S. Jo\u00e3o de Alpor\u00e3o defined the medieval town limits, making a clear\ndistinction between this location and the military and strategic point of the Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The route follows the aforementioned avenue to the Largo da Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova, where the Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova Church is located<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 5 \u2013 Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova Church<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Founded in 1154 over a Roman building, it was donated by King D. Afonso Henriques to the Knights Templar, as stated\nin the inscription on the church's main facade. The Templars\u2019 original mission was the protection of pilgrims, and in\nSantar\u00e9m, they were located in a prime strategic and military area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Church of Santa Maria da Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova was an\nimportant collegiate and royal chapel between the 13th and 19th centuries. In the Middle Ages, it maintained a school\nthat functioned until the 18th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adjacent to this square, in the Largo de Santiago, you cross the Santiago Gate, an ancient wall gate, to descend the\nmedieval cobblestone path of the same name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 6 \u2013 Santiago Gate and Medieval Path<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of the seven gates that marked the medieval walls of Santar\u00e9m, only two remain: the Sun Gate (Porta do Sol) and the\nSantiago Gate. The latter was one of the main entrances\/exits of the walled city of Santar\u00e9m, connecting the riverside\ndistrict of Ribeira to the Alc\u00e1\u00e7ova via the Santiago path. A coat of arms of Portugal can be seen on it. It is currently\ncrossed by countless pilgrims on the Way of Saint James.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Descending this ancient path\u2014which has a significant slope and uneven pavement\u2014toward Ribeira de Santar\u00e9m, you\npass the site of the former parish of Santiago. Its church collapsed in the 1755 earthquake, and the image of the Saint\nis now part of the collection of the Gothic Church of Santa Cruz, located on the left at the end of this path.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The route proceeds through this riverside center to Rua Louren\u00e7o de Almeida and from there to Rua do Meio and Rua\ndo Alfageme de Santar\u00e9m, eventually crossing the railway line to the Palhais Fountain, located near the ruins of the\nold Palhais Hospital, where pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela were welcomed until the 14th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 7 \u2013 Palhais Fountain<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A fountain that supplied travelers heading North, as well as those arriving in Santar\u00e9m via the three country roads that\nconverged there. Near the fountain were the Gothic church and the Hospital of Sta. Maria de Palhais, of which traces\nremain. It was one of Santar\u00e9m's most prestigious institutions as a hospital-hostel serving travelers and pilgrims. Built\nfrom the remains of this hospital, a large wall supports an 18th-century Rocaille Baroque stonework structure. The\nwater tank is separated from the two spouts by a wrought iron guard to distinguish the animal watering area from the\nsupply point for the local population and passersby. The water flows from two spouts styled in the fashion of the\nperiod.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the right is the Alcorce Bridge, an example of the medieval heritage elements that supported this path<\/p>\n<p>PI 8 \u2013 Alcorce Bridge<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A medieval bridge that was part of the easiest itinerary connecting Santar\u00e9m and Coimbra, passing through Goleg\u00e3,\nTomar, Pombal, and Soure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between the 16th century and the late 19th century, it was part of the Royal Road used by\ntravelers\u2014some arriving in Santar\u00e9m by river\u2014destined for Coimbra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, the route follows the Country Road (Estrada de Campo), and approximately 1 km to the NW, enters dirt\ntracks providing access to the agricultural fields of this Ribatejo lez\u00edria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further ahead, the route returns to the paved road lined with estates: Quinta da Cruz da L\u00e9gua and Quinta da Boavista\non the right, reaching Vale de Figueira via Rua Campo do Rossio up to the main church, the Church of S. Domingos,\nwhere the clock indicates the date of 1861.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PI 9 \u2013 Parish Church of Vale Figueira<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A likely stopping point given the length of the journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The interior features a single nave with five Baroque gilded\nwoodwork altars and beautiful decorative tiles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the church, to the right, follow Rua do Sobral, and the journey continues once more along dirt tracks. Houses\nbecome scarce, and as the terrain becomes more rugged between the estate fields, the dirt path is lined with cork\noaks, eucalyptus, and poplars, along with denser vegetation near the Alviela River.
